爱德华•霍普 《夜游者》1942年，布面油画



《夜游者》具有一种不分国别、民族和时代的穿透力，它描绘了一个通宵的餐馆，里面坐着三位各怀心事的顾客。几个人物也避免了眼神交流而相隔而坐， 人物关系却很暧昧，表现出一种纯粹美国式的孤独、孑然与深沉。

虽然霍普曾否认他在《夜游者》中刻意表达了人的孤立与都市生活的空虚等，但他承认，他“可能不知不觉地描绘出了一座大城市的孤独”。
